2024 Missouri State Fair Food
Hungry as a Hog
I had never been to the Missouri State Fair, and damn, it’s a blast! I spent 8 hours out there on opening day and I still did not want to leave.
Arriving at noon, we parked on the grass for free and made our way up to the grand entrance. I was overwhelmed in the best way when there were already multiple options for shows, merchandise, food, drinks and freebies upon taking our first few steps in.
Our first mission was lunch and we walked past a few food stalls to choose the one with “on a stick” advertised the most. The chicken on a stick and cheese on a stick were delicious. The cheese on a stick was huge, subtly sweet, and just hit the spot. The chicken was very well seasoned (but not overly) and felt like an actual reasonably healthy option, comparably. Hahaha.
While fumbling 1,000 napkins and treats on sticks, we grabbed some coffee out of Birkin Brewing Co’s adorable camper, and grabbed a BINGO card while we were at it. I still can’t stop laughing.
I think we definitely got BINGO.
We didn’t wait very long before we were double-fisting coffees and beers. First one of many.
There were so many food and drink vendors that you rarely found yourself in any sort of line. Perfect for grabbing something new and attending the next cow competition.
After a space-themed circus show we wandered a bit before finding more beers, planning when to watch pig races, and seeing a sign boasting “FRIED DEVILED EGGS”. There was no debating. We had to have them. The crunch was incredible #ASMR, and the topping was luscious and gooey. These were definitely the most unique of all the items we tried. I am not sure if these paired well with the horchata that we grabbed, but hey, we do what we want.
I’m a big fan of Missouri Wines, so our next stop was the wine tent! The blow up wine bottle was top of the list for photo-ops and I did not miss out. At the bar we ordered two flights: I asked for them to choose their favorites for me and then my friend picked out her own. Mine were one each of sweet, dry, white and red while hers were all very fruit forward. The pear wine was lovely! It was nice to sit in the shade and taste all the different varieties. In the end my favorite wine was the Chambourcin. It would have been very fun to attend one of their Wine 101 classes!
I couldn’t believe I was still hungry at this point, but hey, I told you I was there for over 8 hours! We took a much needed hot dog break before creeping on all of the carnival games (which were def creeping on us more than we were on them…). We decided to pass on the games so we could afford more food, but we did shell out for the ferris wheel! We rode it twice and I would highly recommend. It might have been one of my favorite experiences of the day. I think the petting zoo holds the number one spot.
Lastly (because I convinced myself not to get a turkey leg) we scooped up a hot and delightful funnel cake with Bavarian cream topping. Can you mess up a funnel cake? It was just perfect. Cover me in powder sugar any day.
