A Sneak Peek at Q39’s New Menu Items by Innovative Chef Philip Thompson

BBQ Nachos

Pulled pork, cheese sauce, chipotle, fresh pico de gallo

Do I need more reasons to go to Q39?

No, but I’m happy to pop into my favorite KC BBQ stop and try their new menu offerings!

On Tuesday night I was ecstatic to sit down with friends and new foodie acquaintances to hear about the inspiration behind the new items and try each and every one of them. The entirety of Q39 Midtown is decorated with trophies and ribbons from successful BBQ competitions, and the room we were seated in was no exception.

We started off by ordering cocktails from the friendly waitstaff. The Berry G. Basil Lemonade with Union Horse Whiskey was shouting my name. For this cocktail you may choose between whiskey, Restless Spirits Builders Gin, Union Horse Vodka or Bacardi Rum. Personally, I am a huge whiskey fan, so this was a no-brainer.

The first two dishes that were brought out were the BBQ Nachos and the Smoked Mozzarella Caprese Salad.

BBQ Nachos: Pulled pork, cheese sauce, chipotle, fresh pico de gallo

Smoked Mozzarella Caprese Salad: Smoked mozz, arugula, tomato, balsamic syrup, sea salt

WOW. I am usually NOT a nachos gal - I am a slow eater and soggy chips are not the most delicious thing in the world - but the BBQ Nachos were my favorite thing of the whole evening. (Spoiler alert?) The very bottom of the dish is covered in cheese sauce, so there’s always extra to go around. It’s light and tangy, not overpowering the rest of the ingredients. The fresh pico de gallo makes it seem like what you’re eating is health food because of it’s refreshing taste and crisp texture.

You cannot go wrong with a caprese salad in my opinion. I’ll drink balsamic syrup straight any day. It was cool to hear how they take time to prepare and smoke the mozzarella for this dish.

Cheers!

Are you ready for some pork belly?

“House dry rubbed pork belly, smoked and finished over an oak fire grill.”

Though the Pork Belly Appetizer is a frequent go-to for me, it was exciting to try something new in the Smoked Pork Banh Mi and the Pork Belly Tacos!

Smoked Pork Banh Mi: Grilled pork belly, pulled pork, spicy mayo, Asian slaw

Pork Belly Taco: Pork belly, spicy mayo, southwest slaw

These two selections are so luscious and hearty with the pork belly, but the spice and veggies keep them light on their feet.

Our last entrée… Mac & Q. The dish I was obviously the most excited for (and still am)!

Mac & Q: Our classic from scratch five cheese mac with herbed breadcrumbs.

Create your own toppings combination:

  • Pulled Pork

  • Onion Straws

  • Sausage

  • Brisket

  • Roasted Tomatoes

  • Pork Belly

At this point of the tasting I was so full… but that did not stop me. I had large helpings of both of the mac combos offered. This sure gave the BBQ Nachos a run for first place in my heart.

Let’s not forget dessert!

When our table partners departed the event, we stole the remainder of their dessert and demolished the larger part of both trays.

My friend and I absolutely loved the Strawberry Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie and ESPECIALLY the Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting.

Wow. Alright, see ya later. I need to go get the leftover mac from my fridge!
